Barr, Gravel, Kubby and Ventura Headed to Denver Battle Royal
-------------------------------------- Kubby 2008 http://www.kubby2008.... May 8, 2008 Barr, Gravel, Kubby and Ventura Headed to Denver Battle Royal by Steve Kubby, Libertarian for President There have been some dramatic new developments, as we head to Denver for the Libertarian Party's Presidential Nomination Convention, which starts on May 22nd. After months of indecision, Bob Barr will officially declare his candidacy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, this Monday, May 12th. Barr made a name for himself in Congress as a drug warrior who blocked a vote by DC residents to legalize medical marijuana and his role in President Clinton's impeachment. He lost a primary election in 2002 and claims to have become a libertarian, although he still supports a national sales tax, Plan Columbia and the US War on Drugs. URL:<http://politicalticke... -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Meanwhile, Jesse Ventura has announced that he plans on attending the LP convention and that he may be entering the race as well. URL:<http://thirdpartywatc... Ed Rosenthal and Jack Herer would still like to attend the convention, but I have not been able to raise the money to cover their hard expenses and I fear we won't be able to have them come. That's unfortunate, because it looks like Bob Barr will win the nomination if we don't have an organized presence at the convention. We still need people to come to Denver and serve as voting delegates. Please contact me immediately, if you would like to be a delegate. "Steve Kubby" <steve@kubby.com> While most outsiders would consider Barr an automatic winner, his opposition to gays, which continues, and his support for the Patriot Act, which he now says he regrets, rubs many libertarians the wrong way. Former Senator Mike Gravel hopes to capture the nomination, but he is a staunch supporter of National Health Care and the Fair Tax, two somewhat appealing ideas that libertarians believe will cause far more harm than good. Unless Gravel abandons these two positions, most libertarians agree he has zero chance of winning. Jesse Ventura, might have a chance, if he was better organized, but he isn't and just showing up isn't going to work. Until yesterday, many libertarians would have told you that I faced stiff competition from Wayne Root, author of "Millionaire Republican" and Mary Ruwart, author of "Healing our World." However, last week Root took a play right out of the GOP playbook and attacked Ruwart for a statement she made ten years ago. Root claimed the statement supported child pornography and rape. Ruwart responded yesterday and exposed Root's fraudulent claims. Now the media is jumping into the fray with tabloid reports. The LP is so upset about the entire affair that the Executive Director of the LP National Committee resigned. Root and Ruwart are now locked in a battle that goes beyond the presidential race and to the very heart and soul of the party. That could prove to be a replay of the 2004 LP convention, where the two top candidates took each other out and a poorly financed, relatively unknown, but staunch libertarian, Michael Badnarik, took the nomination. See Root's attack at: <http://thirdpartywatc... > You can read Dr. Ruwart's reply to Root, "Do You Believe in Liberty?"at: <http://thirdpartywatc... > Which leads to the final question. How can I hope to defeat a former US senator, congressman, and governor? For the answer, please see what David Nolan, the founder of the LP, has to say about my chances, and the chances of my competitors, for winning the nomination. Read Nolan's essay, "How They Can Win The Libertarian Nomination," at: <http://thirdpartywatc... > The Libertarian Presidential Debates will be televised live on CSPAN. In order for me to qualify for the debates, I'll need 83 delegates to support me. My friends and advisors all believe that I do well in debates and that I just might hit one out of the ballpark, if I am allowed in the debates. However, it is clear that I can't do it alone and I will need others to come to Denver to help qualify me for the debates and to vote for me. Your personal participation in this convention, as a delegate, could make the difference! |
